The new rising name to succeed Petkovic.

As the lead towards Félix Sánchez seems to be fading, a new name is starting to emerge insistently in discussions about the succession of Vladimir Petkovic. The Algerian Football Federation is said to have contacted Paulo Bento to explore the possibility of entrusting the Portuguese coach with the management of the Greens.

A profile that has plenty of arguments. At 57 years old, Bento has solid experience at the very highest international level and has already managed several prestigious teams. His time at the head of Portugal between 2010 and 2014 remains a significant reference in his career.

With the Seleção, the Portuguese coach reached the semi-finals of Euro 2012, before participating in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. An experience that allowed him to face the demands of international football and the pressure of major competitions.

But it is especially his work with South Korea that left a mark. Appointed coach in 2018, Bento led the Taegeuk Warriors to the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup. His team notably achieved a remarkable feat by defeating Portugal on the last day of the group stage, thus securing their qualification for the next round.

The Portuguese then continued his journey on the bench of the United Arab Emirates, which he managed until 2025. An adventure that allowed him to gain more experience in a different footballing environment.

His CV, his international experience, and his knowledge of national teams could therefore appeal to the FAF. As Félix Sánchez seems to be losing consensus, Paulo Bento could quickly become one of the most serious alternatives.

The race for the succession of Petkovic is definitely far from over, and the Portuguese coach could well be the new candidate to watch.
