Jordan - Algeria: The history of encounters
Second day of the World Cup and already a highly tense match for the Greens. After Argentina, it's Jordan's turn to be our opponent!
Two brother nations, with very cordial relations since always, and now two teams that will have to fight hard to advance to the next round of the competition. Both defeated by three goals (with nevertheless one goal for the Hashemite Kingdom), Jordan and Algeria are in a poor situation and must absolutely win to keep their qualification chances intact.
Ranked 63rd in the FIFA Coca-Cola rankings, the cousin team of Palestine has, strangely, not had many friendlies with the Greens. In official competition, and with the exception of the only Arab Cup, it would have been difficult to see the two nations face off, but in friendly matches, if we set aside the strange story in 1974 and the small friendly match thirty years later, the plate is quite empty.
We are in September 1974 and Houari Boumediene is leading the nation's policy. The international tournament of Kuneitra is taking place in Damascus. The Greens having had to withdraw, it is the legendary Nasria Hussein Dey (NAHD) that goes there to represent the homeland. The blood and gold will take the opportunity to slap Jordan (6-0) but also their Lebanese neighbor (4-1).
On the national team side, nothing until May 2004 when Belmadi, Yahia, Mansouri, and others rely on Cherrad to overcome their Jordanian opponent. The match was played in Annaba and the late Robert Waseige was then in charge of coaching the team. So, this will be a great first in official matches for this Jordan - Algeria!
